# Portal VPN

For some parts of our infrastructure, VPN access is required. We do this to protect you from Internet attacks.

Please notice that you can still decide to offer services in your cloud without a VPN requirement, but please ensure you have hardened your service before you do so.

## Install the VPN Client

### 1. Download OpenVPN

You need an [OpenVPN](https://openvpn.net/) client installed on your computer. Download the appropriate version for your operating system:

- [Windows](https://openvpn.net/community-downloads/)
- [MacOS](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/macos.html)
- Linux:
  - [Ubuntu Gnome](https://torguard.net/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=53)
  - [Ubuntu KDE](https://www.initpals.com/linux/how-to-connect-to-a-openvpn-server-with-ovpn-file-from-kde-kubuntu/)

### 2. Download the configuration file

Download and import the Sunrise VPN configuration file:

[!file VPN config file](images/static/sunrise.ovpn)

---

## Connect to the VPN

### 1. Enter your credentials

Use the following credentials when connecting:

Field   | Value
---    | ---
Username | `<the email you use to logon to portal>`
Password | `<portal password>,<OTP>`

!!!info Note
- Include a comma between your password and the One-Time Password (OTP), there is no space.
- Login via Federated ID (Microsoft, Google) is not supported, you must use a native portal password.
- If you did not set a native password during registration, you can reset it using [I Forgot my Password](https://sso.ai.sunrise.ch/realms/kvant/login-actions/reset-credentials).

## Troubleshooting

### Linux, resolv.conf not updating

If `/etc/resolv.conf` does not update properly after connecting, add the following line to your `sunrise.ovpn` file:

```ovpn
script-security 2 up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
```

!!!info Note
OpenVPN and openresolv must be installed for CLI use on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS.
